We need to change our whole notion of Education!!

I watched a video on TED.com. It was about the new concept of educaiton. Tom Robinson, he talked about it with a great sense of humor. What he told us is that we need to change our old and faded notion of educaiton that we has had since industrial revolutionary age. today, we are on a totally different situation. Globalized, advanced technologies, World wide interent and so on. all theses things and changes allow us to enjoy high standard of living a lot better than before. But why still we feel some kind of unsatisfied feeling. Some people may say that its because we are always complaining rather than recognizing how wonderful our life is and suggest that we should thanks to the world and if we do so, the life will be fulfilled. But i dont think it is not only a personal conflict. Although we do know that life is wonderful and we should thank to having a chance to live on the earth, we can not easily remove some certain feeling of unsatisfied. if so, what the core cause that causes this kind of feeling? Though I don't know whole causes of this feeling, I know that one of the reason is from contemporary educational system focused on to create the Professors.

What I think we have to do for our education system is to give a more chance to experience the world. As the Robinson in the video said, learning dance is important as much as learning math and science. In school, we are forced to study not what we want to study but what we have to study. Most of the students in korea study not for their life but for university. In this way, korean eduational system taking the chance to learn how to manage and to choose our own life away when we are at best time to learn it. Finally educational system create the people who don't know how to manage their life after we got into Universities. It is a serious problem. As Chul soo Ann mentioned, Korea needs more enterpriser creating the new values for public. But practically the statistics shows us that the young boys and girls in korea has strong tendency to have secure jobs like lawyers or doctors rather than seeking for jobs which they can be passionate and love. however when we have a job we want to have, we are devoted to job and feel strong responsible for what we do. And this will lead to enhance our society not only economically but also qualitativly.

Second is reformation of the evaulation system which provokes radical competition one another and sereious polarization of studying. Rather than developing an system evaluating students who has great potential, we should agonize how we can inspire the student to have dream and do better. We should teach how great each of us are rather than let them know what ranking you in. We have been teached that the goal is to be the best one. But our generation needs a team. Nowdays, world is most complicated world in history. No gifted person who can lead without a team. We have to let them know that as a person, we are weak but as a team, we are strong. so i suggest to evaulate students by as a team not a single person. then we can endure our failure with others and we can feel oneness, friendship, sense of community which make our life worthwhile.

These are the ideas that i want to share with you. And there are the ideas that i will do. We need change. Call for strong action.

  1. Great to see all the thoughts you have about Ken Robinson's speech (not Tom, actually). You wrote A LOT, and I hope that is because you were inspired. Keep in mind I don't expect you to write as much if you don't feel like it. 200-300 words is even okay, but this is also great if you can manage it. Since this is not a writing class, I actually want students to develop free flowing English skills without focus on "essay" and "grammar."

One thing that you might want to do is post a Video of the speech in your blog post. It will help your audience see what you are talking about.

I agree with all your opinions, and especially about Ahn Chul Soo's vision of a more creative future for enterprise.

All in all, a great first post on your blog.:)
